Designing Your Lifestyle Starts with Your Surroundings. At Abigail-Elise Design Studio, we specialize in designing homes that are centered in wellness. We recognize the influence your surroundings have on your health, happiness, and mindset. The following list of “5 Easy Tips & Tricks to Bring Wellness into ANY Space” will help guide you in your journey to design your lifestyle.

1) Incorporate Biophilic Design through Plants or Other Elements of Greenery

Biophilic design focuses on human’s innate attraction to nature and natural processes. The use of biophilic design principles in commercial spaces has become increasingly popular because it keeps people happier and healthier while indoors and away from the home. Copy this practice inside your home by adding plants or other elements of greenery. Focus particularly on the areas whereby you spend most of your time. You will start to notice that these spaces will immediately feel calmer and time spent there will be more enjoyable.

2) Add Layers of Lighting

Lighting, especially when natural, is another biophilic design principle that is widely used to add wellness to spaces. In your home, add layers of lighting to allow for a change in ambience and mood given your activity. For example, make your space vibrant and lively with bright overhead lighting or floor lamps when hosting a family gathering. Change the vibe drastically with table lights and warm bulbs to make it more romantic. Natural sunlight bulbs make a dark room feel more welcoming, especially if there aren’t any windows. During the daylight hours, use sunlight to your advantage as sunlight naturally kills germs, increases serotonin production, and improves quality of sleep.

3) Collect Art that is either Original and/or Sentimental

Look around your space, note which items “spark joy” (thanks Maria Kondo!) and what is taking up space. Collect decor and art that is either original and/ or sentimental as those items will “spark joy”. Be intentional and somewhat picky with the items you select so that their presence has the potential of sparking a memory or feeling that produces pure joy. A good rule of thumb is to only obtain artwork in meaningful places such as art shows, travels, and other memorable times.

4) Incorporate Fresh Cut Floral

Incorporating fresh cut floral into your home’s scenery is a quick, inexpensive way to add color, fragrance, and change of scenery. This is an especially amazing trick for anyone who can’t or doesn’t want to keep plants, and still wants to add an element of greenery into the home.

5) Design your atmosphere with scent

Scent is often forgotten about until there is something foul around. Decorate your home with scent so that every space invokes all the senses. Incorporate scents that elicit pleasant emotions. Start small with something simple like lavender, vanilla or rose oil then move to scents that bring back cheerful memories such as pine for winter holidays or coconut for a tropical vibe.
